How to Open and Convert HEIC Files on Windows
Transferred photos from your iPhone or iPad to your Windows PC and found that Windows Photos can't open them? Here is why it happens and three simple ways to fix it without paying for Microsoft Store extensions.
Why Does Apple Use HEIC Instead of JPG?
Since iOS 11, Apple devices capture photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. Based on the HEVC/H.265 video compression standard, HEIC produces photos that are roughly half the file size of standard JPGs while offering superior 16-bit color depth, transparency support, and live photo animations.
While HEIC saves gigabytes of storage on your iPhone, Microsoft Windows does not include the HEVC codec out of the box due to patent licensing fees. When you try to double-click an iPhone photo, Windows Photos displays the error: "The HEVC Video Extensions is required to display this file."
The fastest and safest approach is to convert HEIC to JPG with Any File Converter. Unlike traditional websites, your photos never upload to a cloud server:
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter.
- Drag and drop one or dozens of iPhone photos into the dropzone.
- The browser decodes the HEIC container in memory and outputs high-quality JPGs instantly.
- Click Download to save your JPGs (or download them bundled as a single ZIP archive).
Method 2: Prevent iPhone from Saving HEIC in the Future
If you want your iPhone camera to capture standard JPGs automatically:
- 1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
- 2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
- 3. Tap Formats.
- 4. Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.
Note: This only affects future photos. Existing HEIC photos already taken will still require conversion.
